ABOUT PHIL VANDERLEIPhil Vanderlei was born and raised in Southern California. His grandfather, Mayor of Bakersfield for several terms, was a blacksmith, and Phil learned metal working and welding techniques while working in his grandfather's shop. After completing high school, while attending City College he decided he wanted to become an artist. Phil began his art career working directly with the metal, welding sculptures in a variety of styles. During the late 60's and throughout the 70's he was commissioned to create several large sculptures for various banks throughout the State of California. He also designed many pieces for movie sets, most notably Rod Serling's series "Night Gallery". During the 80's, in order to enhance the detail and quality of his work, Phil began sculpting in clay and wax. He created and produced numerous small pieces which were sold in over 135 fine gift shops and art galleries throughout the United States. When Phil felt he had reached a pinnacle in that style and series, he built a home on the coast of California, spending 4-1/2 to 5 years creating a unique and artistic style dwelling. The finished product was featured on the cover of Better Homes and Gardens, Building Ideas, Spring 1994 issue and was showcased in an 8-page photo essay inside. After the completion of his home, Phil returned to sculpture and began his current series on marine life. After experiencing the variety of sea inhabitants in the Hawaiian Islands and Mexico, he became intrigued with their form and movement. Studying sea life above the surface, Phil was excited by the whales, dolphins, marlins and sailfish breaking the surface with power and energy. Studying below the surface he was impressed by their gentleness and supple movement. His new sculptures reflect both aspects. Throughout his career Phil has worked to achieve finely detailed sculptures produced in the highest quality attainable. |
